CATTLE OFF FOR WINTER
Hello All, As planned the grazier has removed the 5 girls from Bramshot Heath today and taken them back to Foxlease Meadows for their winter retreat. Thank you all once again for your help this year. The site is really starting to become a heath of great potential. Heather seedlings are growing across the entire cleared area, gorse is starting to form in dense clumps, sundews are re-establishing themselves in much higher densities now tree shade has gone. Fingers crossed if we do not have too bad a winter we may even have some woodlarks breeding on the site next spring (this is my goal for the site long term!). We will come out next week and take down the signs, turn off the trough and put the site to bed for winter. Thanks a million and one times Elliott

Cattle moving on after another good years grazing
Hello all, I was informed by the grazier today that she plans to take the cattle off in the next couple of days to the reserve over the road where they will spend the winter months of lush green fields and meadows. The cattle have yet again done a fantastic job on this new site. However, their efforts would not have been possible if it was not for all of you who go out and looker the livestock in rain sun and wind. You have all been so supportive once again of us grazier this piece of military training area which we are so so appreciative of. As mentioned earlier the livestock will only be on the other side of the road in meadows opposite the Harvester restaurant so if any of you would like to continue to looker them you would be more than welcome to (I can arrange for guy to give you a tour of the site), just let us know. Otherwise they will be back on site in March/April time which will be with us before you all know it, Thank you all once more Elliott

Tuesday, 29 October 2013
Hi there, following on from Sue's comments, I was over there today and at 11:30 and also noticed the big Oak tree branch fallen in D15, now laying across the road/track, no immediate concern but will need attention is obstructing the road/track. I called Guy at 11:40 as I also notice the fence cut in F12 which I believed did need emergency attention so Guy & Mike arrived very promptly at 12:00 to meet me on site. We also looked at the fallen branch in G11 but this does not need immediate attention but may fall onto the fence at a later date. Many thanks guys & nice to meet you at last :-)
Tuesday 29 October 8:40 am
All cattle standing quietly in H4, looked fine.
I walked the perimeter fence. No damage to the fence or gates. I removed some small branches.
But the following probably need attention in due course.
H9 - Oak branch diameter 20cm hanging, it will damage the fence if it falls
D15 - Large oak branch 45cm diameter hanging, blocking the path near the trough (but missed it when it fell) - looks dangerous.
N2 - Silver birch 20 cm diameter resting on the railway fence, tree on railway side but I could not push it off
G3 - Two trees down on lane by the railway.

Late site visit
Called in on my way home to clear up a small Silver Birch which had fallen over the fence on the Eastern fence line. It was dark time I got there so couldn't check the cattle. Thanks for your help checking in the blustery conditions and do take care still as some trees, that have stayed up, might have been weakened by the wind and wet ground.

All walking along the lane from N2 towards car park. Moving at a fair pace, all looked fine, apart from Daisy who was bringing up the rear and each of her steps looked laboured. When the others stopped to graze she just plodded on as if she knew that it would be difficult to catch up if she was left behind.

I have left a VM for Elliot and called the office and spoke to Laura at 1pm. I was over walking Rosie this lunchtime, turning the corner in G13 at 12:50, I thought, oh bless there they are, then I spotting someone running away from Jericho who started trotting quite quickly towards her. I quickly put Rosie on her lead and walked towards a couple who were in there mid 30's, wearing dark jackets, they had a small terrier like a Scottie off the lead. when I approached them I asked what it was they were feeding them, they said carrots. I said, please don't feed them as they have enough food here. they then just said, carrots are ok and started walking off in the direction of where I came from. Trouble is the cows obviously liked the carrots as they started to get quite close to me and then followed the couple down the track. I cut inside and walked back up through the meadow and found the girls right by the cattle grid in C16 but no sighting of the couple who I guess carried on walking down the track. I have never seen this couple before but just wanted to make everyone aware.

Lovely to see the Girls up ahead of us when we started our walk this morning. At 8:30, we followed them slowly as they walked up the track from J13. At quite a pace they were going too (except for poor old Daisy who was lagging behind, she looked stiff while dragging her legs slowly) they eventually came to stop & ate what they could around the very far cattle grid in C16. Apart from Daisy's slowness & all the burs on Morag, all looked fine.

Jericho, Crumple and Bambi hiding in C5, Morag and Daisy by the gate B4. All looked fine. Morag is still covered in burrs. I have never seen them right down there before. Daisy was eating the nettles outside the fence, she was expert in maneuvering her head and horns through the barbed wire.
I looked for a hour first thing this morning but I don't know where they were hiding. I thought they must be somewhere as I spotted them in K7 yesterday evening. About 15:40 today they were all making their way across the path E5, grazing on the short grass.

Could not find the girls this morning was out at 8 am for a long walk they must of been hiding.
All safe well and dozing
I popped out to check on the reported scramblers yesterday, having phoned the Police (101) and the MoD but although there by 14.15 the bikers had gone. The MoD Range Marshall came out to check the area too but without success. The cattle were increadibly laid back under the trees in the centre near the wood pile, so if they had been disturbed they had recovered well. Thanks for reporting the incident, and for not seeking to confront to hooligans. The Police are keen to log such illegal activity and occasionally mount operations with the MoD to apprehend the culprits and destroy their motor cycles. Sorry for late post.

Site Check Today
After Debbie's call this morning regarding the problems with Crumple and Bambi Keith and I made a visit to the site this afternoon to check things out. The mark on the Bambi's side doesn't look like an open wound but it is definitely attracting flies and causing some discomfort because of this. The grazier has been contacted about Crumple's eye problem and Bambi's side and they will be coming out to take a look in the week. They will administer some eye drops to Crumple and take a look at Bambi at the same time. Other than that everything was in good order.
Sunday, 4 August 2013
Thanks to Ruth, I found the cows at 10:30 this morning, Jericho out in the open in L4 chewing away looking fine in the sunshine. The others were deep in the woods in K3. Daisy was fine laying with head down on the ground, Morag had some flies on her face but nothing too bad today but did have lots of woodland stuck in her coat. Crumple was sitting down very still but with a weeping left eye again like last year with lots of flies buzzing around the eye area and lastly to poor old Bambi. She was standing looking very irritated by all the flies and like yesterday afternoon, there were loads of flies around her. I stood and watched for a while, she brushed away some flies from her side and there is definately, what looks like, a dark/black wound there to which the flies immediately returned. I am concerned for these 3 at the moment so will make a quick call to the office first thing tomorrow morning and hopefully get them some attention.
At 6pm yesterday, Crumple, Bambi & Morag were together by the water trough in D15. Daisy & Jericho in E15. I was a little concerned for Bambi as she had loads of flies buzzing around her face & left side of body which appeared to be bothering her. I couldn't tell if there was a anything there or not. Morag appeared to also be bothered by the flies too. I have not seen them so on edge for a while so will check on them again today. Can we please keep a closer eye on these two over the next week...Many Thanks

All the cows looking very well I am impressed as last year they looked ok but this year better must be the improved grazing. Gerico was licking bambi a fair bit on her hind quarters no wounds just a heard thing I guess.
They were at J11 @ 7 and on the way back from our walk at 9pm they were at the water trough.

sorry for my blogglessness last week my computer crashed.all five grazing away in k10,nice to see them altogether, although jericho was being quite argy bargy with bambi and she even tried to mate her twice, really quite bizzare to see. only other concern was bambi seemed to be having trouble breathing, she was making her sides really judder. x

Not easy to spot them now everything is shooting & the tall grasses but at around 10:50 we first saw Bambi in K6 head down grazing, her coat is looking lovely now. Morag & Jericho were grazing in I5 with Crumple standing in J4, looking fine. Then...do you think I could find Daisy! Well we know she can wonder at times but I must say, after 15 mins looking, I was getting concerned. Then my dog Rosie went running off into the woods, came back and looked at me as if to say I've found her. So off I go and thank goodness, there she was sitting down deep in the woods in L3. I got up close to make sure she was ok but although she didn't move and was not bothered by Rosie, I did get a good look at her and she did appear ok. so glad I found her though!

All except Jericho hiding in corner N14, very difficult to see sitting down, looking fine. When I came out of the wood Jericho was standing by the path in M13 not sure where she was when I walked by. They always hide when I have little time, do they have ESP or is it just sods law?

Up very early this morning. Nearly gave up on them, walked all over and couldn't see them anywhere. Headed back to the car and drove back down the track from the car park and thought I'd take one last look and there they all were in C4 around the big tree, it was around 9am by this time. I should know better, they do like it there. I was in the car so didn't get a great look at them but they seemed fine.

After an extensive search, and as I was about to give up, I found them hiding under the rhododendron not far from the gate at D4. Looked quite miserable and still and very close together, but fine. I had been told they were up near the trough but the person must have been mistaken. I don't think I would have missed them if they had been on the move.
They are always difficult to find when you have least time!!!!

Trough OK and plenty of cake in the blue bucket. The gate near the trough was not properly shut, good job they don't appear to want to escape.

At 12:15 today, Jericho slowing moving around with her head down eating away in I5. Further round the path we saw the others all in I6 sitting down (except for Bambi who was standing) by the tall trees, all chewing the cud. They let me get up close and so took the opportunity to take a good look at them. They were very calm and happy in the sunshine with a little breeze.

Thursday 30 May 9:15 am
Crumple browsing on the edge of the woods, I7, the others all grazing on the other side of the path, spread out in J7. All looked fine, not raining this morning but very wet from heavy rain overnight.
I met some dog walkers who said they had found the pedestrian gate by the car park not properly closed on several occasions. May be worth checking in future. I usually walk over the cattle grid as the catch is stiff so would not usually notice.
Wednesday 29 May 8:15pm all by trough.

Tuesday 14th May - Site Check
Hi Folks,
My name is Richard and I'll be working for the Trust for a couple of months as an Assistant Reserves & Grazing Project Officer so you may see my name pop up on the blog every now and then.
I did a site check at Bramshot Heath this morning and found all five cattle in square H12 and all in fine form. While checking the trough, which was working fine, I dropped of a new lick which should keep them going for a while.

At 9:30 this morning we followed Daisy down the track in F6, thinking we would see the others but no sign of them, so when Daisy stopped to eat the grass, we continued walking on. Eventually found the others close together in H7 eating grass. Unusual to see Daisy so far away but they all looked happy and not bothered by me getting a close look at them. All appeared fine. I also checked the lick and trough. It was so good, at last to see some growth coming through now and was lovely to see all the bluebells out.

Jericho M14, other 4 on the other side of the path, M12/13. All peacefully grazing on the grass.
There seems a lot of litter, bagged dog poo etc. on the site at the moment, mainly by some of the kissing gates. There was talk of a volunteer dog warden, did any one take this role on?
If I get a chance, and remember, I will take a bin bag and rubber clothes and have a go at the rubbish.

Hello all!
I’m Guy, the new Assistant Grazing Projects Reserves Officer, very pleased to meet you.
A little bit about me: I am a postgraduate with a BSc in Wildlife and Conservation Management, about 5 years of theoretical and practical conservation management (3 at Winnall Moors with Rachel Remnant), a BTEC National Diploma in Game and Wildlife Management where I received some excellent training in estate skills, habitat management, and a good working knowledge of the sporting industry in general, and 4 years of work within the security industry, I’m not reeeeally your typical bouncer ;)
My last 3 months was a rather random and thoroughly enjoyable introduction into the world of Outdoor Education at Testwood Lakes teaching schools and families pond dipping, mini beast hunting, and woodland skills, if you need a story read to a 2-4 year old about a teeny tiny tadpole, or Norman and his strange shell, I’m your man!
It’s my first day out with Mike today and I’m blown away, the sites are excellent! And it’s the first time I’ve used radio tracking, mighty useful it is too as we couldn’t initially see the cows from Brocks Hill, but found them in the wood looking very chilled.
Looking forward to bumping into you guys, hopefully see you soon! I’ll be the chap looking a little bewildered, and dare I say it, lost!
Guy

Found them right in the corner at N2. They were heading alone the road by the railway with Bambi in the lead. All moving well. They stopped to eat brambles K3 and Bambi was making her odd coughing noise but nothing unusual. I am not sure if her udder is slightly swollen on one side. Others all looked fine. Eventually found the girls this morning at 9:30am walking along the path from b6 where it looks like they've all had a good soak in the mud (what's left anyway) as their hooves were black, looked like they were wearing socks lol. I stopped and watched them trot on down the path until they got to about e6 where they stopped to eat what they could but there doesn't appear to be much for them at the moment. They all seemed to be fine but I did notice Daisy's back legs were a little stiff still bless her.
Saturday, 6 April 2013
Arrived at 8:15am, with the sun shining (hooray, at last) this morning to find the girls all together, waiting for me as I drove over the railway bridge lol. So all were in D4 of course. They were all by the fence, just sitting there very still except for Bambi who was standing still. All looking ok. I checked the trough & broke the ice as we passed over the other side.

Cattle checked and feed block delivered
Hello all,
I visited the site yesterday just before lunch and found the girls all munching on pine and gorse which is always pleasing to see.
They followed me down to he trough as hey probably realised I had a new feed block for them. They then happily jostled with one another taking in turns to have their fill.
This late spring is causing the a long delay (2 or 3 weeks at a guess) in the grass growth so the cows are having to walk around more to find food. I guess this is why they are always on the move.
I am on leave next week so if you have any problems please call the office on 01256 381190. Fingers crossed for some sunshine!
Elliott

Tuesday 2 April 08:45
All looked fine, heading purposefully down the track away from the trough from E14 to F13 led by Crumple. All moving freely.
Broke the ice on the trough, about 1/4 inch. I am not sure if that was why they were all marching away, but hopefully they will find water later. The sun is out so it may warm up a bit. Hope so, it has been a long wet miserable winter.

Hope shes ok They have been doing an awful lot of walking lately, they always seem to be on some mission or another .x

Jericho, Morag and Daisy grazing heather L7, Bambi and Crumple in undergrowth browsing gorse M7. All looked fine.
Last week, one evening about twilight, I met some dog walkers who said the cows by the F7 cattle grid were a bit aggressive, especially the bull. However, when I asked for more information about the "bull" they did not know what colour it was. Should we be doing a bit more public information? I was thinking we could have a poster with their pictures and names (and brief biography?) I would be willing to produce something if you think this would be helpful.

Was lovely to see the girls back, especially with our beautiful new addition, morag, shes amazing looking with her white horn looking like they've been dipped in black paint.I'm glad we were prewarned that they looked thinner because bambi really does, her hips stick out a mile, poor thing. daisy is looking slow as ever, saying that she seems to be the leader,i saw them yesterday and today and both times the group were on a mission lead by daisy,it was lovely to see them all intermittantly waiting for each other, quite amazing to stand back and watch. All seemed well and its great to have them back x

So nice to see the girls back including Morag, isn't she lovely...saw them all (unexpectedly) today at 4pm in F/G7, all munching away. I welcomed them all back & they all seems happy to be back. Looks like Bambi's had a hard winter though, didn't like the look of her coat at all but am sure someone will tell me that its normal ?
