I visited late last night at sunset as I wanted to survey for a rare bird called the Nightjar. It is a nocturnal bird that sings at dusk and only lives on heaths in this country. It is also a bird that suffers hugely at being disturbed as it nears on the ground.
Needless to say I heard it on site so can confirm a swell as having breeding woodlarks we also have nightjars on site.
This is fantastic news and will add further weight to my aspiration of having this piece of land designated for protection due to its wildlife. Big fight ahead.
Also the cows were all well and grazing as the sun set
Hi Elliot, I understand the Nightjar is one of UK rarest birds (only about 4K breeding pairs). Anyone watching Springwatch recently would have seen the extreme excitement at the BBC managing to film one of these allusive birds last week at RSPB Minsmere. To think of having them on the Heath is very interesting ! With a new housing estate now to be built at the old Pystock site adjacent to the Heath makes it probably under more threat than ever long term. Your find indeed shows even more how precious this area is to wildlife and that it should be protected.
ReplyDeleteThats fantastic, I've been so enjoying watching and listening to the stonechats and I saw a whole group of nut hatches the other day, foraging from tree to tree. Oh and the sundew are beautiful again. Loving this place more and more. X
